Top 12
Sanjaya Malakar’s very critical performance. Here, Sanjaya sang Ain’t No Mountain High Enough and the three judges were not exactly impressed with what he did because the piece was ill-fitting for a man. Sanjaya was still able to advance to the next level but he was in the bottom three.
Top 11
Admittedly, Sanjaya Malakar’s most excellent performance ever. Sanjaya moved an audience, a young girl named Ashley Ferl to tears. All three judges gave a more positive appraisal of his performance in this song.
Top 10
Sanjaya Malakar’s performance of “Bathwater” was outshone by his “fauxhawk”, a hairstyle made up of multiple ponytails. In the middle of the song, Sanjaya forgot some of the lyrics, yet was able to secure a safe spot for next week. Sanjaya’s inclusion to the top 10 had allowed him to be a part of the 2007 American idol tour visiting over 50 cities in Canada and the US.
Top 9
Sanjaya Malakar finished off in the middle three, singing “Cheek to Cheek”, wearing a white suit and sporting a new haircut. He danced with judge Paula Abdul.
Top 8
“Besame Mucho” was Sanjaya Malakar’s piece in this level. This was his first, unanimously well-received performance during the finals competition. During rehearsals, Jennifer Lopez remarked, "I like this kid. I love Sanjaya!" after hearing him sing in Spanish, since he was only one of the remaining eight contestants to do so on the Latin-theme night. Randy Jackson commented, "You’re one of the smartest contestants I've ever met. That was actually really good. It was.", while Simon Cowell said, "I'm going to hate myself for this. It wasn't horrible." Sanjaya saved his spot that week.

After performing,
“Something to Talk About” on the previous night, Malakar was placed in the bottom three and was finally eliminated in 7th place on April 18, 2007. Singing his farewell performance, after the line "let's give them something to talk about", he good-naturedly ad libbed "other than hair" in place of "how about love".
